ストーリー (THE STORY)
ガランとした舞台に中年の弁護士キップスと若い俳優が現れる。キップスは青年時代、誰にも告白できない恐怖の体験をし、以来悪夢に悩まされていた。彼はその体験を家族に語ることで悪夢から開放されようと決意し、その手助けに若い俳優を雇ったのだ。話のあまりの長さ、語りの拙さに、俳優はある提案をする。“若き日のキップス”を俳優が、“キップスが出会った人々”をキップスが演じるのだ。そして「芝居」は始まった。
キップスの記憶が再現されるにつれ、劇場でも奇妙な変化が起きていた．．．
“イギリスにおいて約20年間ロングランを続けているオリジナル作品の演出家として、私は1992年より東京にて日本語版の演出をするという幸運に恵まれています。東京とロンドンで作品の交流をするというアイディアは、1999年に交わしたほんの気軽な会話から生まれたものでした。そして今それが現実のものとなったことをうれしく思います。
他の国の言葉で演出するということを通じて、私は単に演出についてだけでなく、芝居そのものについて多くのことを学びました。それはまるで、この作品を異なる文化のプリズムを通して見る機会を得たようなものでした。
日本人俳優たちは、この作品に自身の演劇の伝統や経験を込めていますが、それはイギリスのカンパニーのそれとは全く異なっています。例を挙げると、この作品は幽霊の話、そして信じられないものを信じることについての話です。西洋では、霊というものはしばしば陽気な疑いの話として語られますが、日本においては、もっとずっとシリアスな意味合いとして受け止められます。日本語をロンドンで上演することは、イギリス人にとってはなじみの台詞を外国の言葉で聞くという、そしてロンドンに住む日本の皆さんにとっては、有名な芝居を自身の言語で観ることができるという、ユニークな体験になるでしょう。

"As the original Director of this play in the UK, where it has been running continuously for nearly twenty years, I have been extremely fortunate to have been travelling to Tokyo to direct it in Japanese since 1992. The idea to create an exchange of production between Tokyo and London grew out of a casual conversation in 1999, and I am delighted it has come to fruition.
I have learned so much from directing in a foreign language, not only about directing but also about the play. It was as if I was granted the chance to view the piece through a different cultural prism. The Japanese actors have brought to the play their own theatrical traditions and experience, which are quite distinct from those of an English company. To give an example: the play is a ghost story, a play about believing in the unbelievable, but whereas in the West, the idea of a spirit world is often greeted with light-hearted scepticism, in Japan, it is met with far more serious consideration. Thus to present the Japanese version of the play in London –for one week only- gives English audiences a unique opportunity to see a familiar text in a foreign language. As a firm believer in the power of cultural links to bring a world community close together, I am proud to have been involved with bringing it to London."

俳優 (CAST) 上川隆也
1965年東京生まれ。中央大学在学中の89年に演劇集団キャラメルボックスに入団。95年、NHK70周年記念日中共同制作『大地の子』で主演に抜擢される。以降、舞台、映画、テレビドラマと幅広く活躍中。『ウーマン･イン･ブラック』には99年、2003年に引き続き3度目の出演となる。

Takaya KAMIMAWA
Born in Tokyo in 1965, Takaya Kamikawa is one of the most highly acclaimed actors in Japan for his performances in theatre, TV and film. He joined a theatre company called Caramel Box in 1989 and was chosen to star in the drama Daichi-no-ko(NHK) and went on to appear in numerous television and film roles for which he has won many awards. His stage work has also earned him the reputation of being one of the finest actors in Japan. Kamimawa was involved with The Woman in Black since 1999 and this year will be his third season in Japan.
斎藤晴彦
1940年、東京生まれ。早稲田大学卒業。劇団・黒テント所属。
テント公演、小劇場から大劇場まで、貴重な存在感のある実力派俳優として幅広く活躍中。『ウーマン･イン･ブラック』へは1992年の日本初演以来の連続出演で、今回が6度目の出演となる。

Haruhiko SAITO
Haruhiko Saito is one of the most highly acclaimed actors in Japan. His career has spanned numerous theatre productions as well as television and film appearances. He has also published three books about classical music and theatre. Haruhiko Saito has been involved with The Woman in Black since it first appeared in Japan in 1992.
